Umm Qais:

TESTIMONY OF A DEMON-POSSESSED MAN

(Mark 5:1-20)

blessed obey

How does it feel to have a restored life? How beautiful is it to have freedom in our life? I want to take you to the story of young man who used to live in Umm Qais (Gadara). This place is near from the border between Jordanian and Syria. Today, this place is dangerous because of ISIS terror and violence.

umm qais

The true Bible story began about a young man possessed by demons. It looks like he has freedom in his life. He lived by his own will and did whatever he wanted. Nobody could chain him or control him. He lived not far from Sea of Galilee.

Many times people saw him walking around wildly in the tombs near a village called Gadara. When someone shouts loudly, there are often two possibilities: either they need help or it is a shout of happiness.

This man lived alone and had long lonely nights among the tombs and in the hills. He tried several times to commit suicide because he was suffering so much. We can know that he was not really free, but was called ‘Legion’ because he was possessed by many, many impure spirits.

No one could set him free. No one cared anymore about this poor man. But Jesus Christ wanted to set him free. He rebuked legion and cast out the demons from this young man. He was healed, saved and in peaceful condition after meeting Jesus! Yet, this is not the end of the story.

poss

Jesus sent him back to his village with clear instructions: Go, Tell what God has done to your life! The world history records that even Jesus Christ was rejected in Gadara Village, but still the Good News spread across the ages.

Do you know that one of the church fathers who attended the Nicaea Council (325 A.D) was from Gadara? At the Byzantine era, the majority of Gadara residents were Christian. Archeologists found more than 400 crusader coins in Gadara.

It proof of what this young man had done — he followed Jesus’ instructions and told the Good News of Christ and this had a big impact on Gadara’s history.

Today God’s calling resounds with the same echo of truth. If God has ever blessed your life, saved you, healed your sickness and helped your life, now is the time to continue bearing fruit of good deeds for God’s work.

People who let God be involved in their life, will not lack God’s providence.

People who obey God’s word already blessed in their life.

God involved

FAITH IN ACTION

FAITH IN ACTION

(Read: James 2: 14-26)

faith

The other day, my children were playing lego and watching children’s television.  When we called them for dinner, they only said, “ok” but they didn’t come. Finally we shouted, “dinner time!!!” and in a seconds they were seated around the dinner table. Parents have a good purpose when they call their children to gather for dinner time. But, sometimes children are just to busy with their toys and forget to listen to the parents.

The relationship between God and believers can be describe like the relationship between parents and their children. Many believers just too busy to their life and did not pay any attention of what God wants in their life.

Listening to the Word of God, and even saying, “Amen” but then not doing what the Bible says is just like what James describes as a dead faith. A type of Faith which does not lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead! Good will is one thing, but without doing good deeds, good will is nothing but dreaming.

James remind the believers in their sojourn in the world that faith without action is nonsense. Abraham believed in God and bravely left his comfort zone for the Promise Land. He dared to make a sacrificial altar for Isaac and believed beyond his understanding that God knew what was best. Rahab believed in Joshua’s God and helped save the life of Israel’s spies in Jericho. They believed in God and showed their faith through their actions.

fresh waterFaith in Jesus Christ is not only for Sunday mornings at church, but must be part of our everyday lives as we share with our family, friends and neighbors.  Healthy fresh water coming down from a mountain is pure and drinkable,  but standing water in a dungeon is contaminated with bacteria and is unhealthy and undrinkable. A Christian life, which is created in Christ Jesus to do good works by blessing others, is like healthy fresh water from heaven. But when Christians are hindered because their faith is just in theory and isn’t a reality in their lives, this will drain their spiritual life and nullify their purpose in life. May God help us to not just believe and trust in Jesus Christ, but to nurture our faith by doing good deeds. Amen.

FATIH WITHOUT ACTIONS IS DEAD,

FAITH WITH ACTIONS IS TRUE LIFE

DO NOT STAND STILL

DO NOT STAND STILL

I Corinthians 9:24-27

fear

Do you think Gold is valuable?  Sure! But not to Inca’s tribe who lived hundred years ago.  When Spain found South America, Inca tribe had already known about iron, bronze and gold.  But what they did not understand was how valuable the gold is.  Inca people use gold as a comb, to pluck their eyebrows and also as cooking tools.  They just didn’t understand the value of gold until Spain colonized them.

Hidden Gold of the IncasToday a lot Christians just don’t understand how valuable it is to become a follower of Jesus Christ and so they stay lukewarm.  Many believers prefer to think about them self rather than think about “what God wants me to do.

The Apostle Paul realized that he only had one life to live and that he should work hard to fulfill God’s plan for him.  I Corinthian 9:24-27 is about how Paul didn’t want to live his life in vanity; to just watch life passing bye.  He made every effort to accomplish what God had already designed for him since he was born.  Paul draws a comparison between the Christian life and a runner and a boxing competition.

In the Greek translation of verse 26 when Paul says, “beat the air” (verse 26b) he meant like a boxer who was boxing to gain victory.  For believers in spiritual warfare, he wants them to give their all to gain victory.

We have a fixed goal of eternal life which is our certain future.  That’s why Paul fully committed to do more than just span with his flesh. When all of us will one day in eternity face the judgment of God, God won’t be asking:”How much savings do you have?  Do you have gold?”  No!  He will ask, “What you have done for Me?”  As Christians, are we just staying lukewarm after God saved us?  DO NOT STAND STILL..!

There’s a story about millionaire who threw a huge party. Everybody invited to this party enjoyed so much rich food, beautiful background music as well as the luxury mansion facilities. And then the owner of this party announces, “My dear guests, I am so happy with the profit of my company is overwhelming and abundant.  As a token of my thankfulness, I would like to give one person one of my mansions; one of my Lamborghini sport cars and also one million dollars!”   “Wow…!” There were so many sounds of happiness and surprised shock from the guests.

alThe party owner continued, “But, I will only give these wonderful prizes to the first person who comes across this pool full of alligators!”  Quickly everybody went quite. “Splash…!”  Suddenly there’s a man who swimming as fast as he can.   He survived unharmed!  Everybody cheered him.

The millionaire says, “Fantastic! Congratulations!  This is the key to the Lamborghini and other prizes will also be yours.  But, I have a question: what made you so brave to cross this pool?” The man said, “I don’t want your mansion. I don’t want your money and I don’t want your car either!  All I want is to know: Who pushed me in that water!” This story is just a joke.

Sometimes God allows us to be pushed by someone or some situation that we don’t want at all.  We must leave our comfort zone to experience spiritual growth.  We must not be lukewarm with our faith.  God allowed believers in the first century to be persecuted so they would leave their comfort zone in Jerusalem and go tell the world about Jesus Christ.

There’s God’s blessing inside our obedience to Him.  There’s a growth behind our suffering and being in an uncomfortable zone.  But, I’m confident that nothing we do for God is a waste of time or effort (I Corinthians 15:58).  DO NOT STAND STILL – KEEP MOVING FOR CHRIST.

As I close this message, let’s watch the testimony of a man who become a believer. He felt joy and peace because a friend invited him to Church.  (Clip My Hope).

There’s a poet says, “prepare the umbrella before its rain”.  This kind of poet have come from a lesson of life.  It means that we must preparing the strategy of life before facing problems.
Daniel was set the same examinations while at exile’s Babylon.  He and their friends committed to a holy life.  Daniel rejected glamour  rich food and wine give by the king.
Israel religion consume that God’s people who want to live a holy life should not eat such kind of rabbit, pig, and others which describe in Leviticus.  These forbidden was the planning to fulfill the goal of life being redemption by God in New Testament (Mark 7:19; I Corinthians 6:12).
